Is critical thinking being outsourced to Google?

Image
Is 'Thinking' being outsourced to Google? I would like to share a 'funny' that happened on too much dependence on technology ...yours truly was sending out a mail from my lap top programmed to entertain spell check...wanted to send DEEP REGARDS to an esteemed Client and ended up being corrected as DEEP RODS....he he eh....Imagine the offense the esteemed client would have taken. I rest my case on advocating exercising the mind before running to technology for  help. One of my favorite questions to a youngsters -  How many Thai restaurants are in Delhi NCR ? How would you try and find that out?   Responses have varied, but here are some which are fairly common for the Millennial Generation: "So, like, can I use my phone internet ???? Can I call someone who has a computer?"  No, you don't have a phone.   "Hmm... can I walk to an internet cafe?"  There are no cafes here.   " My friend is...

Aspire or Desire???

Aspire or Desire??? One contemplative evening I was driving around the neighborhood with one of my dynamic friend from South Africa. Suddenly he pointed out to a few real palatial houses and asked me – What comes to your mind when you see such palatial houses?   Bit amused I told him – ‘well I appreciate their beautiful architecture” then out of curiosity I asked him “ …and what do you think ?” He was prompt in his reply as if he was just waiting for my question – “Well I think why I can’t own them too” – That set me thinking deep! Coincidentally I personally and  closely  knew the owner of the house he was pointing out to – A small town guy with humble beginnings but big on his goals and dreams. In fact he and I were school mates and on the soccer team together. His mom and my mom were colleagues & close friends teaching in the same school. He used to live in a modest two room set with his separated mother. My grandparents those days had a house...

Pamper & Bestow Vs Power & Empower

Image
This article is inspired by a chance remark by a close friend in the USA during my last visit there. He said with an understandable though questionable pride - Atul...I have COVERED My Kids well for their life..'each one of them is going to have a house and a car which is fully paid for/mortgage free and at least two million USD each when they are 18'. In other words he was bestowing a bounty to them. It set me thinking of an age old adage - If kids are bright why leave them fortunes (they will make enough for themselves) ..If kids are frivolous and useless then why again leave bounties as they are in any case going to unwisely spend whatever is left for them. There was a time when the word EMPOWER was used in a limited and parochial sense - To invest with power, especially legal power or official authority. As Human race evolved the connotation started having broader meaning with which we at HR Power House subscribe to :- EMPOWER is to equip or supp...

PEER PRESSURE

Image
Though we all have a fair idea of what it means………let us still begin by understanding the term Peer Pressure – It is a Social pressure by members of one's peer group to take a certain action, adopt certain values, or otherwise conform in order to be accepted. Scene at a store in a mall – Three teenagers at a candy store..one of them a bit hesitantly trying to slip in candy unnoticed into her handbag and the other two egging her on…’come on…we dare you…You can…..we are sure…’…and she does it..Heart thumping and palms sweating... but she manages a cool demeanor as she walks out of the store to her grinning friends waiting outside.    First timer that she is....she blurts out – “OMG  - I would not have shop lifted normally but you guys made me do it..” Friends insist that it is a cool act…but she knows sans the pressure  by her friends she would never have done it. WELCOME TO THE WORLD OF PEER PRESSURE!!! How these groups come about is worth ...

Make Your Teen Adventurous

Image
Simply put : An adventure   is an exciting or unusual experience. Now why would anyone indulge in excitement at all??? The answer to that is – LIFE IS NOT A JOURNEY TO THE GRAVE WITH THE INTENTION OF ARRIVING SAFELY IN A PRETTY AND WELL PRESERVED BODY,  BUILT  RATHER TO SKID IN BROADSIDE  THOROUGHLY  USED UP. TOTALLY WORN OUT, AND LOUDLY  PROCLAIMING  – WOW WHAT A ROLLER  COASTER  RIDE THAT WAS!!! Adventures may be activities with some potential for physical danger such as exploring,  Skydiving ,river rafting  or participating in extreme sports . The term also broadly refers to any enterprise that is potentially fraught with physical, financial or psychological risk, such as a business venture, or other major life undertakings. Whatever be the case – one thing is true – adventure challenges us and without challenge we are barely alive. Life can be so monotonous and boring when it is a routine. Besides ...

Parent - Teen - Sex Talk

Image
Telling a sexually interested or active teenager to not engage in sexual activity is like shoveling sand against the adolescent tide. Once a child goes through puberty, his or her body is equipped to procreate, and it's difficult to reverse their interest in sex once puberty takes hold. First things first - You as parents need to realize the above fully and at the same time also realize that SEX is not a dirty word. G etting comfortable with the word SEX in front of your young ones can be quite a daunting task. Its good to try practicing speaking about it without being uncomfortable. Once you have got a certain comfort using that word then embark upon sharing related advice to the children. Find a good time for it...it could be right after a spirit uplifting family moment..say sharing the joy of your  child making good grades or wining a competition or plain doing you proud on anything. Whatever pick your moment well to broach the topic. U se a question technique to brea...
