Traits That Build Meaning and Stability Into Your Teen's Life

Teens need meaning in their lives. They search for purpose, value, and fulfillment. Existing day-to-day and week-to-week isn't enough; they hunger for more than daily routines and obligations. When they find nothing to fill those voids, they're sometimes at risk for exploring treacherous ground with lost people. For life to make sense to a teenager, for him/her to find the motivation and desire to build integrity and achieve, five traits that parents can teach their child to develop will create the bedrock he can stand on. Those traits are resilience, direction, focus, passion, and consideration for others. Qualities like these lay a foundation within that a successful and gratifying life can be built upon. Resilience  is the number one quality I'd want my own child to develop, if I had to choose. The ability to get up after being knocked down. You have a choice to stay down -- or get up and keep moving forward. Rocky says it best to his son in this scene from  Ro...

Teaching Kids Patience

Image
Patience is a virtue that can be instilled in children. Patience teaches children the value of delaying gratification, a skill necessary for maturity. Patience can help develop the ability to think through and resolve problems; it can counteract impulsivity and acting out behaviors. The value of patience lies in its ability to lead to inner calm and emotional strength of character. Teaching patience by example helps children learn resilience, self-containment, and the ability to self-soothe. These are qualities needed for emotional maturity. General Tips for Parents on Teaching Patience to Children Teach by modeling . Refrain from snapping impatiently at your children. Top 10 Issues Impacting Teenagers/Adolescents

Image
I was pushed into writing the '   Top ten problems teenagers face ' after I attended a school program, where I had the opportunity to interact with other parents of teenagers. The normal flow of conversation was in the form of complaints about raising teenagers. I could see that each parent was only adding one more item to the list of complaints. I searched the net - the result wasn’t much different... it was mostly about how to… get your teen to clean their rooms, handle behavior that is  rebellious   or   aggressive ,   problematic teens , defiant teenagers, out of control teenagers , make them more responsible etc … This got me thinking, and I concluded that what we need today is to look at the problem in a different light.. Kids go where there is excitement. They stay where there is love - Zig Ziglar The teenage years, most people agree, can be one of the hardest times in a person's life. Many teens feel misunderstood. They may struggle from depressio...

How to Motivate Teenagers

Image
"Tell your child  - You have to do what you   have   to do so you can do what you   want   to do.' Most Children have the underlying drive to be motivated enough its just that they need to be introduced to the reason for the objective. What they need is a 'why' and they always want to know, “Why am I doing this? Why is this Science project important to me?” And the answer  can’t  be, “Because I told you so.” The answer can’t even necessarily be “because this is your school work.” There has to be something within your child that pushes him past the inconveniences, the shortcomings, and the hiccups that will, without question, arise when he undertakes something that’s challenging. So it’s important for kids to understand  why  they want to do something, not just that they have to do it. When they finally understand how something benefits them, they will do it long term. If the reason your child does something is only because it’s importan...

Open Letter To Parents

Image
Dear Parents, It's tempting to believe your family will be immune to teen behavior problems. To believe that y our  teenager will never back talk, stay out too late or pierce her ears multiple times is like living in a dream – choice is yours.. Get Real or Dream on. Adolescence is a time of rapid change for kids both biologically and physiologically…and cognitively, it’s natural for teenagers to fire their parents and then re-hire them years later, but as consultants rather than managers. But that doesn't mean you have to ignore all that which is harmful and brewing up. You can troubleshoot the following most faced teen behavior problems in an effective and relatively civilized fashion coming across to them as a consultant rather than a manager. Hate you Mom Dad phenomenon: One minute your precious but insecure child is begging you to lie down with her while its dark and thundering in the skies at bedtime. Then, seemingly overnight, she starts treating you like a ...

Exam Stress & Preparation

Image
Exam Stress & Preparation If Children go wrong in this direction then parents are no different too.  In fact it begins with parents. In their busy schedules they cannot plan beyond their own work and their responsibilities to ensure the comforts of their families including EMI's etc etc. In short they are more engaged in fire fighting daily challenges rather than focusing on some far reaching issues like the true empowerment of their children.       They would rather bestow on the child and lull themselves into a sense of false security by engaging a tuition teacher little realizing that the grades will not and have not still improved. In fact it all works quite counterproductive as when grades are not up despite the tuition the child gets furthermore frustrated and the parents have another handle to pressurize the child more by saying that  ..'Look we hired a teacher for your studies and you still cannot get your grades up'. Undoubtedly pa...
